Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records could be sold to a foreign company.

Mavin Records, a prominent Nigerian music label, is actively seeking investment or considering a full sale, according to sources. This has garnered interest from major players like the Universal Music Group (UMG), HYBE Corporation, and financial sector music investors.

The last investment in Mavin Records was in January 2019, when Mavin secured a multi-million dollar investment from Kupanda Holdings. 

The current proposed deal, allegedly facilitated by Shot Tower Capital, values Mavin Records at over $125 million, potentially reaching $150 million to $200 million. However, it’s unclear whether music publishing is part of the deal.

This strategic move aims to secure funding for the label’s expansion, aligning with Africa’s rise on the global music stage, similar to Latin and K-pop’s success.

Whether UMG, HYBE, or another entity takes the lead, the label’s management team, led by Nigerian music legend Don Jazzy, is expected to retain influence.

HYBE appears to lead the race for Mavin Records, despite UMG’s connection to some artists. Rema’s hit Calm Down was distributed by UMG’s Virgin, and other Mavin artists may be linked with Republic, another division of UMG.

Mavin Records boasts remarkable achievements with artists like Rema and Ayra Starr, accumulating over 1.5 billion global streams. Rema’s Calm Down remix with Selena Gomez has a staggering 9.07 billion streams, despite some collaborations not being credited to him directly.

Globally, Rema and Ayra Starr have made a more substantial impact than in the United States, where they have fewer streams. For instance, Rema’s U.S. collaboration with Gomez represents a fraction of the song’s 9 billion streams at just 861.2 million streams.

Mavin Records also houses emerging artists like Ladipoe, Crayon, Boy Spyce, and Magixx, along with music from Tiwa Savage, Wande Coal, Iyanya, and Reekado Banks.

Acquiring Mavin Records offers several advantages, positioning the buyer in the thriving Nigerian Afrobeats scene, that shelved Afropop and Afro-fusion. This genre, endorsed by global stars like Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy, now includes emerging talents like Rema, Starr, Tems, Ckay, Asake, and Fireboy DML. 

It is no doubt that the Afrobeats scene is going global as The Recording Academy recently introduced a Grammy Award category for Best African Music Performance.

Furthermore, the buyer would gain Don Jazzy’s expertise, co-founder of Mo’ Hit Records in 2004 and the owner of Mavin Records, solidifying its status as a leading African record label.
